BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) is the generic term for the 3 essential amino acids isoleucine, leucine and valine. The body cannot produce these itself, which is why they have to be supplied through daily food intake. They represent the largest group of amino acids in body tissue and form a high proportion of amino acids in muscle tissue. They also serve as an energy source for the body in phases of energy deficiency by using BCAAs from the muscle tissue in the liver for gluconeogenesis.
Supplementation with BCAAs can also have a beneficial effect on resistance to fatigue, particularly in the case of training beginners and prolonged exertion, since this prevents a sinking BCAA serum concentration. This would result in an increased tryptophan influx into the brain, leading to fatigue. As a result of this effect, the mental and physical limitations after exhausting stress phases and a fatigue-related decrease in reaction time can be reduced. We recommend about 10g per hour of training for this.
